Current planned capacity in IRPs across the United States (Exhibit 3) includes 226 GW of wind and solar additions, 100 GW of gas additions, and 73 GW of coal retirements from the end of 2024 to the end of 2035. However, if all companies in our coverage meet their company targets, they are currently projected https://construction-rent.com/environmental-compliance-and-erosion-control-solutions-assistance-to-construction-and-industrial-projects.html to reduce emissions by 63 percent by 2035, compared to a 2005 baseline. RMI’s Engage & Act Platform provides data and insights for real climate impact.
- Are you adding solar, and your existing panel does not support your solar needs and/or does not meet the Local Utility clearance requirements?
- Compared to today, the future grid of 2035 will have lower emissions because of planned coal retirements and wind and solar capacity additions.

Utility plans in the first half of 2026 increased expectations of load, but in response to changing policy and regulation, also reduced planned additions of wind and solar capacity, resulting in higher projected emissions. Generation by technology is calculated with assumed continuation of trends in capacity factor for each company and technology, and is converted to emissions using utility-specific emissions factors by technology. Projected capacity and total generation (load) is based on data collected manually from IRPs by EQ Research, with RMI corrections, combined with historical data.
IRPs do not provide a fully accurate prediction of the future, but we focus on them because they reflect the direction that utilities are currently striving for and a set of proposed actions to get there. Our work is supported by philanthropy as well as partnerships, including fee-for-service engagements. But they made progress implementing emerging solutions to enable fast, affordable, flexible growth. ScottMadden consultants are actively working with our clients to evolve utility planning and enable the clean energy transition. People will be critical to aligning planning processes, and utilities must recruit and train individuals capable of performing these functions.

Modern methods for modeling grid reliability, rather than focusing on individual power plant dispatchability, are necessary to enable wind and solar to receive appropriate credit for their grid services. However, these solutions need to scale and additional revisions to planning processes are needed to enable progress toward a reliable, affordable, low-carbon electric grid. Consequently, the annual data update also increased projected emissions compared to previous reviews in 2025 Q3 and Q2, widening the gap between utility plans and the science-based emissions pathways necessary to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Compared to utility plans at the end of 2025, this reflects 8 GW less wind and solar capacity, 8 GW of additional gas capacity, and 4 GW less coal retirements than previously planned. RMI can pursue the highest-impact climate and energy solutions because we’re supported by people who believe change is possible. Recent utility plans have taken several steps to improve processes and methods to solve for utility priorities of cost, reliability, and climate impact with fast, affordable, flexible solutions.

Make-up sessions during the course are not offered, and incomplete participation due to absences or missed tests may result in unsuccessful completion of the program. The electives are to be determined if those courses will be offered online or in person. Graduates of the program will receive an Electric Utility Planner Certificate issued by Cal Poly Pomona’s College of Professional and Global Education (CPGE), recognizing their successful completion of the program and readiness for careers in the utility planning field. There is also increasing recognition of the potential for non-traditional resources and the need to account for their value properly. Aggregation of DERs, including demand response and bidding these resources into wholesale markets, introduces another level of complexity.

Industry groups have investigated the potential benefits of vertically integrated utility system planning. The interdependencies across the elements of the electric system and with natural gas point to the need for greater coordination and alignment across planning processes. At the gas retail level, there is an emerging need to align demand forecast assumptions better, especially as they are impacted by electrification and the projected impacts on demand on both systems. Demand response has the potential to make the load more flexible, such that under certain circumstances, it can serve as a resource. Further, the continued https://newmexicodesign.net/brs-biotechs-wastewater-treatment-systems-innovative-solutions-for-wastewater-treatment.html adoption of electric vehicles may result in rapidly increasing electricity demand and the creation of new demand centers as charging infrastructure expands.
Integrating data across these functions could provide value but will be challenging, as each currently relies on different data, systems, and plans over different time horizons. Utilities must determine if existing system planning tools can support their vision for integrated utility planning. The extent of integration differs in each case, but common drivers include the belief that traditional utility planning falls short in the face of accelerating industry change and the goal of optimizing investment across systems. As policies seeking to limit greenhouse gas emissions and spur technological innovation have begun to transform the industry, these changes are having cross-cutting and complex effects on all utility functions. Given the increasing complexity of demands on grid performance, IDSP provides a platform for holistic decision-making and the formulation of staged investment strategies.
